Coming of a junior varsity win Friday night in Bushton against the Quiviria Heights High School Thunderbirds, the Western Plains High School Lady Bobcats were hopeful to get another tally in the win column; however, they just couldn’t shut down the T-Birds.
The Bobcats lost, 69-39.
The only period the Lady Cats outscored the T-Birds was in the fourth quarter, when the “mercy rule,” which says if one team is ahead by 30 points of more at any point during the final period of play the clock runs continuously.
During this quarter, the Bobcats put up 10 points and the Thunderbirds only mustered nine.
However, the rest of the game didn’t look so good for the Cats, who didn’t score more than 12 points during any quarter. The Thunderbirds scored at least 16 during the first three periods.
The Lady Cats did play well during the second half, but it was too little too late.
Senior Trista Jenner led the team in scoring, putting nine points on the board. Sophomore Ruth Mendez scored eight.
Junior Beth Lutters played tough down low and put in seven points, and junior Britny Pfannenstiel scored six.
Junior Dakota Foos contributed four points, and junior Kim Martin and sophomore Kate Hagans each put in two. Freshman Katie Showalter rounded out the scoring by sinking one free throw.
Monday brings the start of the Cheyenne Conference Invitational Tournament in Palco. The Lady Bobcats take on the Ness City Eagles at 4 p.m.
